Without overestimating the impact of individual contacts, you're certainly right. Individual contacts are one of the best ways of overcoming prejudices, and prejudices about Iran are quite widespread in the Western world. Personnally, I have good contacts with Iranians with whom I relate in Esperanto, either through correspondence, e-mails or while meeting in some international Esperanto event, if they can afford to travel outside their country. I even had the pleasure of welcoming here at home in Geneva a person very much engaged in the defense of women's rights, Mrs Shirin Ahmadnia, who impressed all my Esperanto speaking friends with her intelligence, seriousness and commitment, plus her sense of humour. (If you want to see her picture, just type "Shirin Ahmadnia" in "Google"). The language barrier is usually underestimated in today's world, especially among intellectuals. Iranians who speak English are not representative of the general population. I was impressed by the following fact. At a time when all Western journalists were repeating that the Shah's regime was solid and was there to last, I met a friend who had just come back from Iran. He told me: "It's funny. Whenever I discussed in English -- and English speaking people are the journalists' informants -- they all told me that the regime is stable, but when I discussed in Esperanto, I got quite a different picture of the population's mood. You'll see: the Shah won't last long." He was right, the Western media were not. Best wishes,
"Ni devus teksi densan reton de homaj kontaktoj inter Irano kaj pli liberaj landoj" vi diris en The Guardian. Sen trotaksi la efikon de individuaj kontaktoj, vi certe pravas. Individuaj kontaktoj estas unu el la plej bonaj manieroj superi antaŭjuĝojn, kaj antaŭjuĝoj pri Irano estas tre disvastigitaj en la okcidenta mondo. Persone mi havas bonajn kontaktojn kun irananoj, kun kiuj mi rilatas en Esperanto, ĉu letere, ĉu retmesaĝe, ĉu kiam mi partoprenas en iu Eo-evento, por tiuj, kiuj povas vojaĝi eksterlanden. Mi eĉ havis la plezuron bonvenigi ĉi tie en Ĝenevo virinon tre engaĝitan en la defendo de virinaj rajtoj, s-inon Ŝirin Ahmadnia, kiu impresis ĉiujn miajn Eo-parolantajn amikojn per sia inteligento, seriozo kaj engaĝo, plus humursento (se vi volas vidi ŝian foton, simple tajpu "Shirin Ahmadnia" en Google). La lingvobaro ĝenerale estas subtaksita en la nuntempa mondo, speciale inter intelektuloj. Irananoj, kiuj parolas la anglan, ne estas reprezentaj pri la ĝenerala loĝantaro. Min impresis jena fakto. En tempo, kiam ĉiuj okcidentaj ĵurnalistoj ripetadis, ke la reĝimo de la Ŝaho estas fortika kaj longe daŭros, mi renkontis amikon, kiu ĵus revenis el Irano. Li diris al mi: "Estas strange. Kiam ajn mi diskutis en la angla - kaj ĝuste ĉe la scipovantoj de tiu lingvo ĵurnalistoj trovas siajn informojn - ĉiuj diris al mi, ke la reĝimo estas stabila, sed kiam mi diskutis en Eo, mi ricevis tute alian bildon pri la sentoj de la loĝantaro.
